A-Level Computer Science

This course is ideal for students with a passion and genuine interest in Computer Science.

The knowledge of programming and how you can use your computer in the most advantageous way for you will allow you to solve many issues or projects in any field of future work in an inventive and effective way. Although no prior knowledge is needed, a GCSE in Computing is beneficial when starting this course. The important skills you learn from this course and this subject will be transferable and highly valued by employers in any future career you pursue.

However, if you wish to study Computer Science at University then it is highly recommended you take this course as it builds a solid foundation for further study. Computer Science is a facilitating subject which opens up a broad variety of courses for you to study at university. 

The AS qualification consists of two written examinations, each worth 50%.  The A level qualification consists of two written examinations and a project-based coursework.

Advances in computing are transforming the way we work and at Herschel Grammar School, we are adapting with the changing times and teaching the new Computer Science specification.

A Level

Paper 1: This paper tests students’ ability on Computer Systems. Students will be assessed in 2 hours 30 minutes exam. Calculators are not allowed.

Paper 2: This paper tests students’ ability on Algorithms and Programming. Students will be assessed in 2 hours 30 minutes exam. Calculators are not allowed.

Programming Project:

The non-exam assessment assesses student's ability to use the knowledge and skills gained through the course to solve or investigate a practical problem. Students will be expected to follow a systematic approach to problem solving. This is the remaining 20% of the A-Level qualification.
