TVLP MFL Language Day
On Wednesday 22 November 14 Year 9 students were lucky enough to be able to attend a Language Day run by TVLP in Langley Academy.

The event started with an amazing buffet of French and Spanish food to enable the students to taste and try traditional fare from these counties. All thanks to Impact food at Langley Academy who delivered an amazing spread.
After food the event kicked off with a fantastic motivational talk from Dominique Nicholls Director of Au Clair de la Lune. Dominique’s presentation was inspiring and interesting and spoke about the amazing careers that languages can offer through to how much of the world is speaking French and Spanish as well as which celebrities are bilingual!
After Dominique’s brilliant start. The students got together in teams to take part in the Culture Connect quiz. A fun interactive session testing the students’ knowledge on France and Spain covering topics from famous landmarks to art, sports, geography and of course spelling!
The aim was to stimulate further knowledge and interest in these countries.
The last event of the day was the final round of the French Spelling Bee Competition.
The purpose of the competition was to motivate students to continue with their language studies in French and Spanish through to GCSE and A Level. There was a focus on the benefits of learning another modern language which opens new opportunities both in the careers field and socially, whilst also celebrating the food and rich culture that these countries can offer.
Modern languages are increasingly unpopular as a subject to take to a higher level and TVLP ran this programme to try and improve uptake.
7 schools took part in the event.
Langley Academy, Beechwood School, Herschel Grammar, Slough and Eton, Windsor boys, Windsor Girls and Holyport college.
The First and second rounds took place online where 2 selected students from each school battled against each other with French spellings which were sent through the previous week. Students only went through to the next round if they didn’t make any mistakes. 14 students started the process.
The Standard was extremely high which meant that we had 8 students in the final at the main event at Langley Academy.
French and Spanish students from years 9 and 10 were invited to the main event where the 8 finalists were put in the hot seats to battle through spelling words and phrases in French with lots of encouragement from their fellow students!
Two of the finalists were from Herschel Grammar School
The final round was fought between Veronica from Beechwood and Dorian from Herschel.
After three sudden death rounds Dorain Derdzinski was claimed the winner.
The enthusiasm of the students was infectious.
