Online Safety
Welcome to this new page dedicated to the issues of Online Safety. This page is for anyone who wishes to find more information on what the school is doing to help young people, parents, and carers keep safe when online.
Today’s children and young people are growing up in a digital world. As they grow older, they must learn to balance the benefits offered by technology with a critical awareness of the risks and harms they may be exposed to, but importantly making a positive contribution online and using technology and social media as a force for good.
Two of our fundamental principles are Care and Responsibility. At Herschel, we aim to ensure our learners are caring, inclusive and respectful in all they do, be it at school, at home, in the broader community or online.
The fundamental principle of an online safety strategy is understating the 4 Cs.

- Contact
- Conduct
- Commerce
We also build on the 3 Rs.
- Respect
- Reputation
- Responsibility
And encourage the 3 Bs or Ss.

We hope to focus on underpinning knowledge and behaviours that can help pupils navigate the online world safely and confidently regardless of the device, platform or app.
We aim to deliver this through a range of approaches such as tutor time, the school bulletin, assemblies, PSHCE/RSE, and built-into existing lessons,
We are also developing specific help, information and support pages for our students and parents. Each page provides links to sites that offer dedicated support to young people and their families.

Internetmatters.org has teamed up with a number of broadband, mobile phone, internet and media providers to produce great advice to help manage your child’s online experience.
They have also produced simple guides to help you set up filters and controls on your home broadband.
