In-Year Admissions
Years 7 – 11 Entry (non 11+)
Most pupils join Herschel Grammar School at the start of Year 7, having reached the eligibility score in the 11+ Consortium entrance examination. However, there may be reasons why you wish us to consider admission for your child during Years 7 to 11 e.g. you may have moved into the area.
Herschel Grammar School is currently over-subscribed, and there are no places available in any year group. If your child does not currently have a school place, you must contact your local authority. Please note that during the school year, we have very few pupils leaving, so gaining an 'in-year' place is highly unlikely.
However, places do occasionally become available which means we are able to consider new pupils for admission. As a selective school, your son or daughter must sit an eligibility examination before a place on a waiting list can be offered. We may also request a copy of the most recent school report from your child's current school.
If you would like your child to be considered for assessment for possible admission to Herschel Grammar School, please complete the in-year application form at the link shown below:
Herschel In-Year Application
Please note – if you are applying for a place in the sixth form, please do not use this form.
Once we receive an In-Year application, we will invite your child to the next available date for the entrance assessment.
The dates for the entrance assessments in 2025-2026 are:
- Friday 5th December 2025 (FULL)
- Friday 13th March 2026 (FULL)
- Friday 3rd July 2026 (FULL)
All the testing sessions for this academic year are full, please wait until next academic year for the form to re-open and apply for testing.
If we have availability and your child is eligible, places will be allocated in line with our Determined Admissions Arrangements.
Applicants who have previously sat the Consortium 11+ test for entry into Year 7, but did not attain a score of at least 111 cannot be considered for in-year entry in Year 7.
Also, if your child left a previous school due to permanent exclusion, you must declare this on the admissions form.
Appeals
If your child has sat our in-year entrance examination and has not been offered a place, you have the right to appeal.
Please complete the In-Year Appeals Form here
You should complete and submit this form within 2 weeks of receipt of your child's result letter. Your appeal will be heard by the Independent Appeals Panel within 30 school days from receipt of the completed appeal form.
