My name is Wendy Barnett, and I have been a Governor since 2010, starting as a parent governor. I am now a community governor. I have been Vice-Chair of Governors for 3 years and am currently in my new role as Chair of Governors. I am also a trustee of the Schelwood Trust, our newly formed Multi Academy Trust, which is committed to raising standards and outcomes for all pupils, supported by a community of inspiring teachers and dedicated support staff. Both of my children have attended Herschel; my daughter has now completed University and my son is in his 2nd year, studying business management. I am a self-employed grounds maintenance contractor, working in maintenance and design, in local primary and secondary schools and other commercial settings. Leisure time is spent working in my own garden, travelling and enjoying good books! Community roles include Neighbourhood Watch coordinator, Slough in Bloom committee and local environmental projects.
My Governor role has included seeing Herschel convert to an Academy, (then a Multi Academy Trust), appointment of a Head teacher and an outstanding Ofsted inspection, as significant milestones. I have a particular interest in Health and Safety in our school, the progress of our disadvantaged students and take great delight seeing well rounded young people progress through the school and enter the wider community. In financially challenging times, making difficult decisions is sometimes necessary, but a variety of Governor Training has left me well placed to understand the “whole picture” of what it takes to maintain standards in a successful school like Herschel. It is essential that we continue to keep teaching and learning at the heart of Governors' decisions. One of the highlights of the school year for me is attending presentation evenings held for our students. I am proud to see how much our students achieve in their time at Herschel, not only academically, but in sports, drama, music and a variety of community roles. I hope to ensure that we as a school community continue to support, educate and inspire our young people, as they take their place in the wider community.
